DONNA'S STORY

In 2007 I was in an airplane accident that saved my life. After being life flighted, they did a CT of the abdomen which showed a 13cm mass on my kidney. Two months later, I had my nephrectomy. Then I started a support group for Renal Cancer patients. And now I am chairman of my community's Relay For Life. I am determined that we will beat cancer!

Today, June 12, is the 1st anniversary of Rita's death. Butterfly of Life® designer, Rita Willaert, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in February 2000. She faced countless chemotherapy treatments, surgeries and fought for a remarkable 8 ½ years. Sadly, Rita passed away on Thursday morning; June 12, 2008 in St. Peter, MN. She was surrounded by her family and close friends. Her spirit lives on through her work and her passion.

Nicky James' story:
Just two years ago, Nicky James was only 12 years old but facing a fight that many of us have only heard of. At 12 years of age, Nicky was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that attatched itself to the stem of her spinal cord. A cancer so rare it had to be sent off to St. Judes for research. Today Nikki is only one of a few that have survived this rare cancer and is currently cancer free. It however, did not come without a price. Nicky is now bound to a wheel chair unable to use her legs. This came after numerous surgeries to remove the cancer. I am inspired by the strength and courage of this young girl. My story is kinda long, but that's ok. In April of last year I went for my annual and there was nothing wrong. Shortly after that I had some weird pains and my periods were really heavy, but since I was ok in April I figured it was just hormones. My ob/gyn recommended Mirena - the birth control implant because at only 33 they found me to be peri-menopausal.When I went to have Mirena placed in June he found a huge vaginal mass and I found out the next day that in under 8 weeks I developed a very rare stage 3 cancer. I went to the gyno-oncologist the very next day and because the tumor was right against my bladder they were thinking they may have to remove my bladder, rectum, vagina, and the rest of my female organs.Luckily, I was with Dr. John Nash at UCONN and they had just gotten a new tomoradiation machine. He consulted with every doc he could get his hands on and thought we should try tomo first.It got rid of this immpossible cancer. It is so rare that I am only the 21st person ever to have this specific type of squamous cell adenocarcinoma - the uniguity is because it normally spreads through the glands, but my glands were clean and the cancer attached to the soft tissue instead - vaginal cancer itself is pretty rare. Apparently it's some sort of mutation. I also found out as far as anyone knows I am the ONLY survivor of this particular cancer.It has been tough. Twelve weeks of radiation, so far 10 moths of chemo (to be on the safe side because the cancer was so aggressive) and several surgeries to remove tumors on my labia and rectum. Yeah, I know, ouch.Luckily, I have a wonderful hubby of 13 years and a great support network of family, friends, and co-workers. I also have multiple sclerosis somy body has taken a whippin', but I'm really tough and I bounce back every time.In fact, I'm planning on going to Italy with my husband in the fall and getting back to all of my volunteer activities. One of the things I'm working on now is writing a book for newly diagnosed cancer patients to help them cope with facing their mortality - it can be a real brain bender, especially when you're young. Faye Abilene, TX - At the age of 33 I was diagnosed with cancer, Ovarian & Uteran plus a volleyball size and baseball size tumor that were also cancer. I didn’t find out it was cancer until after the emergency surgery, I ended up having to have a hysterectomy. Four weeks after my surgery I started chemo. It was a terrible experience but, it made me appreciate life and strengthened my faith. I have been in remission 13 years!

Promoting cancer awareness and education. The Butterfly of Life® was designed by Rita Willaert, from St. Peter, Minnesota. Willaert worked in sales for over 10 years at an independent jewelry store, Exclusively Diamonds, located in Mankato, Minnesota. Willaert's passion for fine jewelry and drive to promote cancer awareness and education inspired The Butterfly of Life®.

Butterfly jewelry inspired by beauty and nature. Willaert knew she wanted to create a beautiful piece of fine jewelry that survivors and supporters could wear but would also donate to cancer research and education. In the summer of 2005, when thinking the task was too big, Willaert spent her day off outside on her deck enjoying the sunshine. It was at that moment that a butterfly whispered by her and she knew this was her mission for the remainder of her life.

Conveying a symbol of hope through precious gemstones and diamonds. The Butterfly of Life® was born and the concept has since evolved into a collection all from Willaert's original design. The butterfly silhouette represents courage, strength but most of all, hope. The various gemstones and diamonds are used to symbolize a specific type of cancer. This way anyone can wear the butterfly for cancer awareness or in honor of a special person.

Beautiful butterfly design helps support cancer research and education. The Butterfly of Life® donates a portion of every butterfly that is sold to cancer research and education. Willaert's goal was to raise $1 million. The butterfly has made appearances at Relay for Life events, Hospice events, benefits and more. It has been showcased on The Price is Right, KARE 11, various jewelry trade magazines and more.

She was passionate about empowering women to be vigilant about their bodies, seeking medical tests and advice and warned not to ignore the signs that their bodies are giving them. Her passion and inner strength defines her as a true survivor. The Butterfly of Life® has allowed people all over the world connect and share with other survivors and supporters. Rita Willaert is a true advocate and will be missed dearly.

Mary Ann's Story

I want to share one of my life’s greatest accomplishments, being a 17 year survivor of breast cancer. It has been a long hard journey, one that I don’t want to travel through again, but along the way I have had many positive experiences.

My journey began with me finding a lump in my breast, being diagnosed with cancer, having a mastectomy in December of 1989 followed by 6 sessions of chemo therapy. Telling my family that I had breast cancer was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. The look of fear in their eyes is something that I will always remember. In January of 1990 I began chemo which consisted of two treatments a week apart and then three weeks off before the next session began for a total of twelve treatments. The treatments were hard, I would get sick, depressed, I was tried all of the time and just when I was starting to get better it was time for another treatment. The children were scared and wondering what life would be like without me. Ryan at 15 grew quiet and always had a frightened look in his eyes. Paul, age 8 was angry, scared and worried about who would take care of him. He told his teacher, “At least my dad can cook so we won’t starve.” During this time I decided we needed a diversion so that our attention could be focused on something happier than my health. It was a time in my life when I could have anything I asked for and I was dumb enough to ask for a dog. We got a buff colored cocker spaniel puppy that lifted everyone’s spirits. It felt good to hear laughter and see the boys smile. She became an integral part of our family and gave us many years of enjoyment.

I could not have made it through this ordeal without the love, prayers, and support of my wonderful family and friends. They drove me to treatments, provided meals after treatments, and were there for help and support in any need that arose. I became close friends with two people that were also going through treatments for breast cancer at the same time. We would get together once a week for coffee or lunch and share our feelings, fears, laughter, and experiences. This was the beginning of a support group that still meets today. Our group has grown through the years. We never want new members, but we always welcome them and share a special bond. Cancer survivors are like a sorority in that we belong to a club that brings you together because of a common entity. We have lost some good friends along the way who will always be remembered and have met many new friends whom we treasure.

As the months turn into years since that fateful day, I can say that breast cancer has taught me many things. You start to evaluate your life in terms of other misfortunes and realize how lucky you are. For the first few years, I couldn’t have a headache without worrying that I had a brain tumor or wondering when the cancer would come back. At some point I realized that I wasn’t in control and would have to take things as they come. My family is also a survivor. My children learned during this time that THINGS are not important. That was a good lesson for them to learn, I just wish it hadn’t been under the circumstances that it was. Watching both of them graduate from high school, college, and become responsible adults was a thrill I never thought I would be able to enjoy. When people make comments about me getting old, I thank God that I am getting old. I have always felt lucky that I only had cancer. I did not need to worry about my job, about paying bills, or insurance. I had the love and support of family and friends to carry me through. Many people have to keep working because of insurance and their insurance does not cover well. They are unable to take a paid leave from work. I was able to use accumulated sick leave. My job would be waiting for me. I had a strong support system that I could count on. Looking at your own mortality changes your perspective of life. You think about how you will be remembered and what is really important in life. That is a good thing.

Many people have been touched by cancer in some way. We each have our own story. My story is no different, I am just very fortunate it has a happy ending.

I am a nine-year cancer survivor of breast cancer, and yet sometimes, it seems like it was just yesterday that the doctor said, "I'm sorry but the biopsy was positive."

As an elementary school principal facing surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, I was concerned about how the diagnosis would impact my professional life as well as my personal life. Young children have many questions and use their personal experiences as a filter to understand new information. I didn't want the children to be frightened by the word cancer. I wanted to make sure that the students and their families had accurate information about my diagnosis to prevent rumors. On the other hand, I needed to balance that with my need for privacy. A difficult balance to find but every day I put on my best smile and my wig and answered their questions as simply and honestly as I could. Secretly, I worried that the children might make jokes about my wig; they didn't. Children were amazing - once you answer their questions, they don't dwell on the, "what if's", they accept it and shift their focus to the next thing happening in their young lives.

I proudly wear my Butterfly of Life, designed by my friend and support group member, Rita Willaert. It serves as a reminder to me to be vigilant about my health, and hopefully, it others about the need to support on-going efforts to find a cure.

My 13th birthday was 10 days ago, and as a birthday present my dad bought me a Butterfly of Life necklace. Being the age that I am the first reaction that went through my mind was "pretty butterfly necklace" but after all the guests left, my dad sat me down and told me what this necklace stood for. "The Butterfly stands for cancer awareness" he told me. "10 percent of every butterfly necklace, pendant, pin, charm or earring sold goes to fighting cancer".

Now cancer has affected my life as well as the thousands of other people on this earth. I lost my Grandma to cancer, and my aunt was just recently diagnosed with breast cancer. I understand what this necklace stands for. Not only does it remind me of what my dad does, it connects me to my grandmother who passed away. It also keeps me thinking of the toll that cancer has taken from my life as well as so may others. Thank you Butterfly of Life.

Signs of Life after Death

For years there was a lilac bush that Rita Willaert loved to sit by in the summers. She would enjoy days outside, sitting in her chair and admiring her garden while enjoying the fragrance. She would always comment that although the bush was beautiful, she had yet to have a year where the entire bush would fully bloom.

The day after Rita passed away her husband looked outside their window and realized that the bush she loved so much was in full bloom and filled with violet lilacs! He ran outside to take a photograph of the bush when noticed there was a monarch butterfly resting on the blooming flower. After he took his photograph, the butterfly fluttered past the bush and sat in Rita’s chair.

Rita suffered from ovarian cancer for over eight years. She was diagnosed in February, 2000 and immediately decided that she was not going to let cancer run her life. She was an advocate and leader for so many cancer survivors and supports. She was passionate about empowering women to be vigilant about their bodies, seeking medical tests and advice.

In 2005 Rita was sitting in her chair next to her not-in-full-bloom lilac bush when a butterfly flew past her. She was so moved and inspired that she in time created a design for a pendant. Rita worked in sales at an independent jewelry store for over 10 years and anyone that knew her could describe in detail her passion for fine jewelry. She had seen all the ribbons, crystal cancer awareness jewelry but never had she seen a piece of fine jewelry for cancer awareness. She created The Butterfly of Life® with a goal to support awareness, raise money for cancer research and education and offer support to those who purchased the butterfly.

She did just that for the last three years of her life. Her goal was to raise $1 million and is available online at www.butterflyoflife.com. Cancer survivors and supporters all over the U.S. have purchased this symbol for strength, courage, support and most of all hope, while donating to cancer research and education.

Rita’s zest for life and sense of humor always made her the life of the party. She always lived each day to the fullest and appreciated her time with close friends and family. She would always joke that when it was her time and she went to Heaven, she would be sending signs to her loved ones to remind them of her.

Rita passed away on June 12, 2008 in a nursing home surrounded by friends and family. She is greatly missed and her legacy lives on through The Butterfly of Life®. When a butterfly whispers past its Rita checking in, just to make sure we continue to fight for her dream. She is still enjoying her garden and finally got to see that lilac bush in full bloom.

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts from cells of the breast. The disease occurs mostly in women, but men can get breast cancer too. Experts don’t know exactly what causes breast cancer, but they do know that certain risk factors are linked to the disease. Some risk factors, such as smoking, drinking and diet are linked to things a person does. Others, like a person's age, race, or family history, can't be changed. But having a risk factor, or even many, doesn’t mean that a person will get the disease.

Eulogy given at Rita's Funeral by friend and co-worker, Sarah.

"I am Sarah and I had the honor and pleasure of working with Rita at Exclusively Diamonds for the last 10 years. When I first met Rita, she was a customer of the store. She had long hair that curled all the way down her back. She had beautiful nails, lots of jewelry and a style about her that was fun and sassy. Rita continued to buy jewelry from us, until one day she said if you ever need someone, I would love to work here. At that time she was working for an attorney and another jewelry store. So soon she became part of our team.

Immediately, the office dynamics changed. Rita was no wallflower! Everyday she would come to work with amazing energy and zest. Humor, sarcasm and one-liners that would zing out of her (mostly that were R-rated) made it a crazy and fun atmosphere.

This woman had an amazing passion for jewelry. She loved diamonds, she loved gold, she loved rubies she loved emeralds, she loved topaz she loved citrine, she loved classic, she loved edgy and high fashion. Every time a sale rep would enter the store with his or her line, Rita would be in the conference room owing, awing, choosing and buying. She just absolutely saw the beauty in all kinds of fine jewelry. And almost every time she would say, “Rita needs this,” and she would choose a piece specifically to wear with her other jewelry. She would also hand select jewelry for certain clients that she felt they needed. Her fingers were filled, her wrists were filled and her neck sported two to three pendants. She had diamonds in her ears, diamonds around her ankles and on her toes. She loved the piling on of diamonds, gemstones and gold. We called her the “Queen of Layering.” If a sales rep came in to Exclusively Diamonds on her day off, we would call her and say, “There is a Rita ring here….you better come in!”, and she would!

Rita had a style about her that no one else will be able to touch. It was sassy and direct. As one customer put it, “She could sell me my own car.” When Rita told someone they needed it……they bought it. She loved working with people and would shine when she was selling jewelry. She loved to tease and sass off to customers. Sometimes I would pull her a side and say, “Rita…..that is probably not appropriate to talk to our customers like that!”…..she would say, “Ok Sarah, I’ll try to talk nicer.” Then she’d go right back to zinging out the one-liners and being sassy.

I remember the Christmas Rita worked when she thought she had the flu. Her stomach hurt, and she said, “I don’t have time to go in to the doctor….I need to work the store!” She loved to work at the store. After Christmas, she was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer. Her family was shocked. We were shocked. Rita was devastated.

From the start of the diagnosis thru 8 ½ years later, Rita stated that she was not going to let cancer define who she was. She chose to fight this disease every step of the way.

Rita had a number of surgeries. The doctors would tell her to take off six to eight weeks after each one. I remember one major abdominal surgery she had, over in Rochester, on a Monday. Rich brought her home on Friday and she showed up for work that following Monday. She said she had rested over the weekend as was ready to come back. Her passion for her work was incredible.

During her chemo treatments she developed a craving for beer. No more fruity strawberry daiquiri drinks for this girl! It was beer she craved! It is customary at the jewelry store to celebrate birthdays with a special lunch for everyone. Rita said, “This year for my birthday I want a keg of beer!” So my husband, Chris, brought over a keg, set it right next to Rita’s desk and she sipped on tap beer all day - talking smart. She would invite customers to come back to her desk… pumped the keg, poured them a tap beer and proceed with celebrating her birthday.

Rita let us try on her hats and her wigs. One day she pranced around the jewelry store sporting a tiara on her bald head.

Humor was always present.

Rita liked to use the “Cancer Card” when it got her special privileges. Correct procedure when you sell a diamond is to give it to Stephanie, our bench technician, so she can schedule it to get set. Stephanie controls the flow of jobs for our goldsmiths. Rita would want her diamonds set first so she would go directly to Scott, Kathy or Doug, our goldsmiths, and say, “Could you set this 2 carat right now for my customer? You know I have cancer.”

Cancer gave Rita tools for her life that she never new she had. She developed a compassion that was unmatched. She connected with people in a powerful ways that gave them strength and hope. She taught people who were on the journey to Live, Love and Laugh. They would come into the store to see this woman of great passion and purpose.

Rita designed a butterfly pendant to raise awareness for cancer. Her mission in life was to bring cancer to forefront of everyone’s minds by sharing the journey of cancer with others. She was passionate about empowering women to be vigilant about their bodies, seeking medical tests and advice. She warned NOT to ignore the signs that their bodies are giving them. Her Butterfly of Life pendant became known throughout the area. A portion of each butterfly sold goes directly to cancer research and education. The ButterflyofLife.com website will now sell Rita’s butterflies globally. Her goal is to raise 1 million dollars for cancer research and she made Briana and me promise to get that done for her.

Rita made every moment count because she knew she couldn’t take for granted a lifetime of memories with her family, whom she loved and valued more than anything in this world. Her husband Rich, her daughters, Sharry, Sarah and Becky, her son-in laws, Tom, Felix and Chuck, her sisters Sharon, Sandy, Karen and her brother Keith. But more than anything, the light of her life was her grandchildren, Zach, Luke, Jordan and Brock. She loved telling stories about them and spoiling them with anything their hearts desired.

Rita said her faith in God was what kept her spirits high. The love and support she received from all of you was what kept her journey so meaningful.

Her last days were spent in hospice at St. Peter. The nurses had never seen a hospice patient go to work! Rita would wheel into the store all dressed up, sunglasses on, dripping with jewelry, socks for shoes and would say, “Hello everyone, sorry I’m late. I’m in rotation. It’s my turn to go help someone. I may duck out early today as I’m feeling a little tired.” Then she would leave after an hour or two and say, “See you tomorrow.”

Rita’s favorite saying was from Mark Twain:

“Dance like nobody’s watching,
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Sing like nobody’s listening and
Live like its heaven on earth.”

Dear Lord,
Thank you for giving us this beautiful, spirited woman. Please keep her passion and legacy alive in our hearts, as we will all miss her dearly. And Father, if you have diamonds in heaven, please let Rita wear a lot of them, so that she can shine and sparkle, just like she did on here earth. Amen"

At the grave site, 100 monarch butterflies were released in Rita's honor. We will miss you Rita.

The Iron Butterfly

About three years ago a butterfly softly whispered past Rita while she was enjoying a beautiful afternoon on her deck. She could feel something pulling her towards the silent symbol and knew that for the remainder of her life, she was destined to help and touch as many people as possible.

She designed the butterfly jewelry to give people hope. Rita did touch so many through her kindness, generosity, compassion, support and love.

Rita passed away this morning, June 12, 2008. She will always remain an iron butterfly that will whisper in people’s hearts forever.

A silent symbol

Cancer is a disease that affects more than just the person with the diagnosis. Cancer affects the families and friends of all those diagnosed with this disease.

Cancer awareness is a battle many people are fighting. Fighting for their life, fighting for their loved one, fighting for strangers.

It's a devastating cause that brings people together and makes people realize what is important. A symbol of hope is what my friend Rita created, through inspiration, passion and faith. A silent symbol that is shared by everyone that wears a butterfly.

It's more than cancer awareness, more than fine jewelry, more than just an accessory. Its a symbol of hope for lives touched by cancer.

In the spirit of Rita and the words she so dearly loved:

Unspoken questions

When my mom was diagnosed with cancer, I remember her talking about what a burden it was.

She wasn’t afraid… she wasn’t complaining. She was speaking of how hard it was to talk about the “C” word. The burden of conversation - those questions asked and unasked.

Recently, the Butterfly of Life creator Rita Willaert was interviewed on KARE 11. The interview pointed out that a simple Butterfly pendant can signal a connection, answer an unspoken question and place people at ease.

I wish my mom had survived to see this beautiful jewelry. She would have loved the elegance, and the thought behind it.

In February 2000, the St. Peter, Minnesota resident was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, a disease she has been living with ever since. At the time of her diagnosis, Willaert was given the type of news that people dread. She was told that her life expectancy could be counted on one hand– just five years. “It was,” she says, “the most devastating day of my life.” Thankfully, so far she has proven the doctors wrong and is doing everything she can to turn the terrible experience into something positive, even during the surgeries and chemotherapy treatments she continues to endure.

It is Willaert’s understanding of living with cancer that led her to try to do something to help increase research into the disease, and also to bring a bit of beauty to the lives of fellow sufferers. With her experience in the jewelry world – she works at Exclusively Diamonds in Mankato, Minnesota– it was inevitable that she would do something with jewelry, which is how Butterfly of Life was born.

“I was undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic,” she says, “when my oncologist said to me that I should design something. I wanted to create a fine piece of jewelry other than the ribbon that you see everywhere.”

When it came to figuring out what that jewelry should be, Willaert reached an impasse and began second guessing whether she could even take on the task of designing the piece. It took a seemingly innocuous event to give her the design inspiration she was searching for. In 2005, she was sitting outside her house when a butterfly fluttered by her face. With that simple event, she found her inspiration. “I took this as a sign from God that I needed to go ahead with the process,” she says simply.

“Butterflies signify new beginnings and as a cancer survivor, each step in the cancer journey means a new beginning,” says Willaert, who stresses that she is not a designer but rather an ordinary person who loves jewelry.

Butterfly of Life is built around a single butterfly design that is adapted not only for each type of pocket but also for each type of cancer. Manufactured by the Kirchner Corporation, the butterflies are available as a white or yellow gold pendant or charm in a variety of designs. Any colored gemstone or diamond can be set in the butterfly to represent a specific type of cancer, in accordance with the American Cancer Society’s awareness colors. The butterflyoflife.com website lists the different stones available and the sadly dizzying array of cancers they represent: from teal diamond, which represents Willaert’s own ovarian and cervical cancer, black diamond for melanoma, peridot for lymphoma, to emerald for kidney cancer.

Kirchner donates $5 for every butterfly sold, and an additional $5 is donated from every retail sale. The proceeds have been donated to the Mayo Clinic as well as to local charities. “I am a cancer survivor,” says Willaert, “and I feel a very strong need for research and education. Cancer can be a debilitating and lonely disease. With research and education, it is my hope to help as many individuals as I can. It is my entire mission.”

Willaert is quick to point out that although some people buy the pieces simply because they like butterflies, most people have a deeper motivation behind their purpose. “We have sold Butterflies to all types of individuals. Most of them are purchased to wear in honor, memory or support of someone who is special to them or is a cancer research supporter.”

Inevitably, with such an emotive item, Willaert has heard a lot of stories. “The most rewarding thing for me is the people who purchase them because they are remembering a loved one who has cancer or who has died from cancer. I have heard so many heartwarming stories over the past two years, which has given me so much gratification. That was one of my main reasons for creating the Butterfly, as I want individuals to share their stories.”

While Butterfly of Life commemorates and celebrates sufferers of al l forms of cancer, many jewelers and designers use the wide support given to breast cancer during the annual October Breast Cancer Awareness month for their charitable actions.
